Hillcrest will be taking both its boys and girls basketball teams to Columbia for the Class 4 Final Four this weekend. The Hornets, the 2010 Class 5 state champions and 2012 Class 4 state runner-up, have been there before, but this will be the Lady Hornets' first trip ever to the state semifinals.

Bolivar made history last Saturday, as both the Liberators and Lady Liberators won state quarterfinal games to advance to the Class 4 Final Four. It is the first time in school history that both teams have qualified for State in the same season.

The Buffalo Lady Bison recently won the first district title in program history. Not content with just a district championship, the Lady Bison are on a magical run that has now taken them to the Class 3 Final Four

Both Gainesville and Plato feature an All-State honoree in their starting lineup, with plenty of scorers getting shots up all over the floor. The team that plays defense and limits its turnovers figures to have the advantage.

If #7-ranked Licking, which won its third-straight district title, wants to advance to the state quarterfinals, the road goes through a perennial Class 3 powerhouse in third-ranked St. James.

The good news for Pierce City is that the Lady Eagles just won their third-straight district championship. The bad news? Top-ranked and two-time defending state champion Crane waits in the Sectional round for the third-straight season.

#3-ranked Walnut Grove is the two-time defending Class 1 state champions, while Hermitage just won its first district title in a long time. The Lady Tigers know the road to Columbia, but the Lady Hornets figure to have a say in whether there is a detour for the defending champs.

Chadwick's trek to the Class 1 Final Four the past two seasons has begun with a Sectional victory over Bunker. To make another run to Columbia, the Lady Cardinals will, once again, have to beat the Lady Eagles in the Sectional round.

Crane's Emma Lander is a junior standout who has already garnered All-State honors in multiple sports and won three state championships. Lander's athletic accomplishments pale in comparison to her faith, character and personality, though.

Lamar's Shelby Haskins would love to meet Rosa Parks, especially if the meeting is in Hawaii and she's wearing two socks! The Lady Tiger junior takes time out for a few questions.

The Big 8 Conference is technically the Big 9 this year, with McDonald County joining the league prior to Carl Junction leaving for the COC. The Lady Bulldogs figure to be in the mix in a wide open race, with Aurora, East Newton, Mt. Vernon and the Lady Mustangs all looking strong.

Bolivar has its eyes set on a deep state tourney run in March, and should take care of business in the COC-Small beforehand. Despite the loss of some key players, Marshfield will not relinquish the conference crown without a fight. Morgan Henderson and Buffalo also will be in contention.

Crane has won the past two Class 2 state championships, and is a prohibitive favorite to make it a three-peat in March. There is plenty of talent in the SWCL (as usual), with several teams poised to make a deep state tourney run in March.

The Mid-Lakes Conference is, arguably, the most competitive girls basketball conference in the state. The Mid-Lakes is a perennial threat to send a team (or teams) to Columbia. This year will be no different, as the conference is as competitive as ever.
